AUTODESK  is an American multinational software corporation that makes software for the architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media, and entertainment industries. The company is headquartered in San Rafael, California.

Autodesk became best known for  AutoCad , but now develops a broad range of software for architectural and civil design, engineering, and entertainment. The manufacturing industry uses Autodesk’s digital prototyping software like Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360, and the Autodesk Product Design Suite, to visualize, simulate, and analyse real-world performance using a digital model in the design process. The company’s Revit line of software for Building Information Modelling is designed to let users explore the planning, construction, and management of a building virtually before it is built.

Autodesk’s Media and Entertainment division creates software for visual effects, colour grading, and editing as well as animation, game development, and design visualization. 3DS Max and Maya are both 3D animation software used in film visual effects and game development.

SKETCHUP is owned by TRIMBLE Inc., a mapping surveying and navigation equipment company.

Trimble Inc. is a Sunnyvale, California based developer of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, unnamed aerial vehicles (UAVs), navigation systems and software processing tools.

Their role in  Building Information Modelling (BIM), architecture and construction has been growing. Most publicised was their 2012 acquisition of the 3D modelling software package SketchUp from Google

There is an online library of free model assemblies, 3D Warehouse, to which users may contribute models. The program includes drawing layout functionality, allows surface rendering in variable “styles”, supports third-party “plug-in” programs hosted on a site called Extension Warehouse to provide other capabilities and enables placement of its models within Google Earth.

SketchUp users are architects, designers, builders, makers and engineers. They are the people who shape the physical world.
